Those interested in select will separate after an hour of practise. Following this session the respective coaches will set up further sessions. All select participants will be at Competitive Edge, March 21st time tbd. Volunteers are always welcome, please contact Gail Sharpe, vphouseleague@pickeringbaseball.ca, if you have questions or would like to volunteer. Who can Tryout? All house league players in the Eastern Baseball Association are welcome to tryout for their respective select team i.e., if you play rookie in house league you can try out for the rookie select team. We do send tryout information to other leagues in the EOBA, however have not had a player come and tryout. As long as a player plays on a houseleague team he/she is welcome to try; we hope this policy will help some smaller centres expose their players to another level of play, and stimulate their house league participation. Players can tryout for the next level, i.e., a rookie player could try for a Tyke Select team; if that family felt he/she was capable, this has happened in previous years particularly because there was not a Select team available at a certain level. Players who play select must attend at least 75 percent of the house league games or they will not be allowed to play with the Select team. Select was established to enhance house league and encourage its growth, this is grassroots baseball! So through the week players will play houseleague on their assigned night and on the weekend (Sunday late afternoon) they will play with their select team. Tournaments Teams may sign up for tournaments, and/or attend the provincials at the end of the season, tournaments generally run from Fri to Sun about noon. Once teams are assigned parents and coaches will decide how many (if any) tournaments they plan to attend. Additional Costs Cost per tournament is approximately $350.00 for the entire team and most tournaments ensure all teams play 4 or 5 games. There are additional costs to play on the select team. An average NOT including uniform is approximately $150 to $200 per player (depending on level), these fees will include cost for balls, umpires ( $38 to $85 per game depending on level of play); home team pays for both of these, field charges, tournaments. Select teams can chose to purchase Red Sox uniforms (rep teams), ranging anywhere from $155 to $220; or chose a suitable substitute, using pants from the HL uniform, a specially designed shirt and the Red Sox cap and socks, cost for this could be under $50.00. Tryouts Indoor tryouts will begin this month, however, no cuts will be made until the players have been outdoors, so in the gym sessions are a good way to see what select is all about, ask questions, get some practice in. The season begins the first of June, however, there are exhibition games scheduled throughout May, it will be up to your coach how involved you will be in May, since during May tryouts are ongoing. When, Where & with Whom? Games will be played on Sunday late afternoon, we will play in the Toronto Baseball Associations Select Loop with approx, 7 home games and 7 away games; there will be championship games the end of August, you will play East York, West Hill, North York, they keep us east of Yonge Street so traveling is kept to a minimum. The loop does not play long weekends. Regular season stops the first of August. More info www.soba.ca. |
