PICKERING - The Pickering Red Sox peewee rep baseball team capped its season with the championship at the 50th anniversary of the prestigious CNE Peewee Baseball Tournament in Toronto recently.
The Red Sox were one of 32 teams vying for the title this year. The event used a single-knockout format, meaning win or go home. In all, the Pickering peewees chalked up five victories to capture the Pat Martin trophy as tournament champions.
In the final, both the Pickering Red Sox and the Burlington Bulls entered the contest undefeated. The Sox came out strong from the opening pitch en route to a decisive 12-3 victory.
The Sox drew a strong Scarborough Stingers squad in the semifinals, with Pickering eking out a 6-4 victory to advance to the championship game.
In the quarter-finals against the Markham Mariners, the Sox responded with a 10-5 victory.
Pickering started the tournament in winning fashion beating the Peterborough Tigers 12-8. The Red Sox-Tigers match was the opening day ceremonial game, where CNE president David Bedar, Lions Club Governor Paul Baker, CNE Peewee Baseball Chairman Bill McBratney, and tournament organizer Marvin Pearl all spoke of the past 50 years.
In Game 2, the Red Sox peewees faced a tough Newmarket Hawks team, prevailing 6-4.
The Sox were also tapped for a number of individual awards. Russell McGibbon was the recipient of the Hank Sinclair award as the Tournament MVP, Ryan Logan won the Bill McBratney Final Game MVP, and Jalen Rhone earned the Sam Shefsky Tournament as the Top Pitcher.
Team members are Logan Abernethy, Cory Duggan, Michael Foster, Ryan Logan, Cody Malloy, Russell McGibbon, Michael Power, Jalen Rhone, Steven Somerville, Grant Tamane, Brandon Tieche and Duncan Watt.
Gary Tamane, Scott Logan and Mike Leufkens coach the team.
